PCBL is conscious of the impact of its business on the environment and is committed to conduct its operations in a responsible manner. In accordance with the PCBL’s CSR Policy of “Preserving and Enriching the environment where we do business”, we have been implementing several CSR projects in the areas of education, environment sustainability, health and community development to support and facilitate development of the underprivileged section of the society in and around our manufacturing units.
The Company’s Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) policy provides the necessary guidance for conservation of the environment in which it operate. Determined to reduce the carbon footprints and recycle water and solid waste, PCBL is taking necessary steps to efficiently utilise its resources. Its aim is to continuously improve its business operations and align itself with the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC) of the Government of India. Maintaining green environment around its plants in line with the EHS Policy, PCBL has established management systems certified by various accreditation bodies such as ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001. Detailed contingency plans have also been developed and implemented to prevent, mitigate and control environmental disasters.
Promoting sustainable practices
Sustainability is at the heart of PCBL’s business processes. PCBL’s co-generation power plants generate power from the tail gas of the carbon black process, thereby replacing the equal amount of fossil fuel fired by the plants. The plants also reduce the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions by 3,91,780 MT of CO2 on an annual basis. The 12 MW co-generation power plant at Palej was the first unit in the world to be registered as a Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
In terms of ‘Environment Sustainability’, PCBL harnesses the emitted waste gases, while manufacturing carbon black for producing captive power for its plants as well as reuse treated waste water in the production process. The Company has installed a facility for rain water harvesting from the existing building roof to reduce the raw water consumption. It would ensure a stable supply of fresh water and most of its manufacturing units recycle the water through the Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP). In doing so this process results in zero discharge of waste from its factories. More than 90% of the solid waste generated is recycled internally across its facilities.
PCBL also contributed towards the cleaning of ponds and rivers near its manufacturing units. Sapling plantation is PCBL’s continuous drive to develop green belts inside and outside its factory premises. Further, the Company supplies organic fertilisers, cow fodder and grass to the drought-prone villages located in close vicinity to its plants.
Ensuring safe processes.
PCBL has institutionalized safety as a value-led concept by inculcating a sense of ownership at all levels. The Company conducts customized risk-based training programmes across its manufacturing units, thereby bringing about an overall improvement of the safety standards. PCBL drives safety in all its facilities by undertaking safe workplace initiatives, which has resulted in zero fatal accidents at the plants.
